Preface

Often in your job things happen and you say to yourself "I should write all this stuff down." That is exactly what happened to me. I wanted to write a book about my experiences in technology and education for a long time, but then something happened.

Two years ago the university where I was working was going through some tough financial times, needing to restructure, and at the same time they were trying to pull off an LMS change. Talk about the perfect storm.

As I sat at my desk that day, the weight of what was coming hit me. A restructure and a platform switch happening at the same time. I had seen this movie before and I knew how it would unfold, knew who would struggle, knew what would be forgotten in the chaos. I said to myself I really need to write this stuff down, and when I left this university I finally decided to write this book.

Not because I had all the answers, but because I had lived through enough technology waves, platform switches, and institutional upheavals to know what helps educators survive these transitions, and more importantly, what helps them teach well regardless of which platform they are using.

This book is not about making you love your LMS. It is about making sure you can teach effectively no matter which LMS you are handed, how many times it changes, or what chaos is happening around you while you are trying to learn it.

If you are facing a platform switch right now, this book will help you through it. If you are not switching but struggling with your current LMS, this book will help you see it differently. And if you are just trying to teach well online without technology getting in your way, this book is for you too.

Good teaching is good teaching anywhere. The platform is just the place where your teaching happens. It is not the teaching itself.

That is what this book is about.

So happy learning and teaching,
Grazia
